Key Features of NIFT's Restructured Curriculum
NIFT's updated curriculum features several key features designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the global fashion industry.
Majors and Minors: Students choose a Major that aligns with their primary area of interest and can further deepen their knowledge through Deepening Specializations (DS) within that Major. They can also complement their Major studies with Interdisciplinary Minors (IDM), choosing from a selection of subjects offered by other departments.
Deepening Specializations (DS): DS options allow students to develop expertise in a specific niche within their chosen field. For example, Fashion Communication students can choose between Visual Communication, Fashion Media, Digital Communication, and Fashion Styling, while Fashion Design students can opt for specializations like Fashion Innovation and Intuitive Clothing.
Interdisciplinary Minors (IDM): IDMs provide students with the opportunity to acquire interdisciplinary skills by exploring subjects outside their primary field. This allows students to build a versatile skillset applicable across different areas of the fashion industry.
General Electives: The curriculum offers General Electives to help students develop well-rounded personalities and gain knowledge in areas beyond their core specializations. These electives cover topics like Personality Development, Communication Skills, Critical Thinking Skills, and Professional Ethics.
Craft Cluster Initiative: This initiative exposes students to India's rich craft heritage through visits to craft clusters, interactions with artisans, and gaining a deeper understanding of traditional techniques and the socio-economic aspects of the craft sector.
Increased Industry Interaction: The restructured curriculum emphasizes real-world experience and practical skills through increased industry interaction. This includes classroom projects sponsored by industry partners, factory visits, internships, participation in exhibitions, and mentorship opportunities.
Focus on Emerging Trends: The curriculum incorporates new and emerging areas like Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Big Data and Business Analytics, User Experience, Sensory Design, Augmented Reality, and Virtual Experience design. These additions equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate a technology-driven industry.
Emphasis on Sustainability: NIFT highlights sustainability as a core focus of its updated curriculum. Students are exposed to sustainable design practices, the use of eco-friendly materials, and responsible manufacturing processes.
Standardized Credits: The curriculum implements standardized credits across all programmes and semesters, ensuring consistency and facilitating academic planning for students.
NIFT's curriculum restructuring seeks to create well-rounded graduates ready to meet the evolving needs of the global fashion industry. By integrating new technologies, promoting interdisciplinary learning, and emphasizing practical experience, NIFT ensures its graduates are equipped to thrive in a dynamic and innovative industry
